This membrane technology is not properly a filtration method. In reverse osmosis, applied pressure overcomes osmotic pressure, driven by chemical potential, a thermodynamic parameter. Reverse osmosis can remove many types of molecules and ions from solutions, used in industrial processes and potable water production. The solute is retained on the pressurized side of the membrane, while the pure solvent passes through to the other side. The membrane blocks large molecules or ions but allows smaller components like the solvent to pass freely.
